It was a matter of great pride to be actively involved as a chairperson at a fetal medicine workshop arranged at New Civil Hospital, Surat, on 26th December 2021. The programme was organised jointly by the Surat Obstetric and Gynaecological Society, along with the radiology department and the fetal medicine department of New Civil Hospital. Being part of an academic event of this scale, held at one of the region’s most important public hospitals, was both a privilege and a responsibility that we at Paaranu Women’s Superspecialities value deeply.
The day began, as all meaningful gatherings in our tradition do, with the lighting of the ceremonial lamp. Standing alongside the organising faculty for that inauguration set the tone for everything that followed, a reminder that knowledge is something we light in one another. From there, the workshop moved into a full day of focused academic exchange on fetal medicine, the field devoted to the health and wellbeing of the baby before birth.
As a chairperson, my role was to help guide the sessions, encourage discussion and keep the focus on practical, real world application. Some of the most valuable moments came not from the podium but from the floor, where faculty and participants raised the questions that arise in their own daily practice. Sitting among fellow senior clinicians during these interactive sessions, microphone in hand, debating the finer points of scanning and interpretation, is exactly how fetal medicine is best learned. Those exchanges are where evidence becomes usable knowledge and where doubts get resolved in a way no textbook can fully replicate.
Holding the workshop at New Civil Hospital carried a special significance. As a major public institution, it serves a very large number of families who rely on it for their entire maternity and newborn care. Strengthening the fetal medicine capabilities of the clinicians who work there has a direct and lasting benefit for the community, reaching far beyond the walls of any single clinic.
Equally important were the moments between sessions, the shared cups of tea, the conversations in the corridors and the group photographs with colleagues from across the city. Medicine is a human endeavour, and the bonds of fellowship built at gatherings like this one strengthen the trust and collaboration that ultimately benefit our patients.
I am grateful to the Surat Obstetric and Gynaecological Society and to the radiology and fetal medicine departments of New Civil Hospital for organising such a meaningful workshop, and for the memento and warm regard extended to me. I thank every faculty member and participant who contributed their time and insight. Events like these reaffirm our commitment to continued learning and collaboration, and we look forward to supporting many more such academic gatherings in the years ahead.
