It was an honour to deliver a talk on “Fetal Adrenals” at ULTRACON 2019 in Ahmedabad, the national conference organised by the Society of Fetal Medicine, India. Speaking at a national platform dedicated to fetal medicine, before colleagues who share a deep commitment to the health of the unborn child, was a genuinely humbling experience and one of the highlights of our academic calendar at Paaranu Women’s Superspecialities.
The fetal adrenal glands are small structures, but they carry a significance far greater than their size suggests. Positioned just above the kidneys, they are among the more challenging organs to assess on a routine scan, and yet a careful evaluation of them can offer valuable clues about the wellbeing of the baby. The aim of the talk was to walk fellow clinicians through the normal ultrasound appearance of these glands, so that the abnormal becomes easier to recognise. When we know precisely what healthy looks like, at each stage of gestation, we are far better equipped to spot the subtle changes that matter.
During the session we discussed how the appearance of the fetal adrenal gland evolves through pregnancy, including its relative size in early gestation and the way its internal architecture becomes clearer as the pregnancy advances. Understanding this normal pattern is the foundation for identifying conditions in which the adrenals are altered. Changes in adrenal size or structure can be associated with a range of clinical situations, and recognising them early allows for timely counselling, closer monitoring and, where appropriate, referral for specialised care. For a fetal medicine specialist, these fine details are not academic curiosities. They translate directly into better decisions for mothers and babies.
What I value most about a conference like ULTRACON is the quality of the exchange. The audience was made up of experienced sonologists, radiologists, obstetricians and fetal medicine specialists, and the discussion that followed the talk was rich with real world questions and shared experience. Presenting is never a one way exercise. Every thoughtful question sharpens my own understanding, and I always return from such meetings with new perspectives to bring back to my practice.
At Paaranu, we believe that continued learning and open academic exchange are essential to good clinical care. Fetal medicine is a field that advances rapidly, and staying at the forefront of it is a responsibility we take seriously, both for our own patients and for the wider community of clinicians we are proud to be part of. Contributing to a national conference is one way of giving back to a fraternity that has given us so much.
